ReCycle is a trading robot that uses an avant-garde version of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) specifically calibrated for the financial markets. SOM is a completely unsupervised machine learning algorithm, developed by the widely known Finnish computer scientist Teuvo Kohonen with almost 50 years of academic research backing the reliability of its technique. SOM is a type of neural network with a fascinating twist: instead of using risk-prone error-correction learning, it takes the competitive learning approach to cumulatively increase the Win/Loss ratio and create a firm and secure ground on which it can make trades.

Competitive learning is a sub-algorithm within SOM where the neurons compete amongst themselves for the highest quality trading logic, with the result that only one is activated at any one time. This means that the EA takes, out of all the possible trades, only that one with the highest likelihood to return a profit. This activated neuron is called a "winner-takes-all neuron" or simply the winning neuron. The result is that the neurons are forced to organise themselves and hence the name Self-Organizing Map.
